Eating disorders are difficult to understand, not only for supports, but also for the individual themselves who are suffering. Often someone with an eating disorder does not recognize they have a problem, and often help and recovery is not welcomed by the individual. The process of accepting any help is hard and anxiety-provoking.
Eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes, and can involve many different behaviors: restriction of food, binge eating, compensatory exercise, avoidance of social eating, rigidity in food choices, body checking, and more.
Negative body image problems may accompany behavioral problems and continue to be problematic even when behaviors are being managed. Problems with negative body image are prevalent and can cause disordered eating.
Eating disorders can be life-threatening and have no visible signs. Often a treatment team is needed and may consist of a medical care provider, dietitian, and/or prescriber.
